Hello Meadows Learning Center Instructors!

Hope you all had an amazing 4th of July weekend and are enjoying your summer activities. The Meadows Learning Center is already planning for our first day of operation – which is coming up fast! Just 132 days and counting to Thanksgiving 2018  – see this: https://days.to/until/thanksgiving-in-us .

As of July 1 there were some organizational changes made in Resort Operations which is overseen by Jeremy Riss, V.P. of Resort Operations. We are really excited about the changes in Resort Operations, the Meadows Learning Center, the rest of the departments and how they will enhance your life as an instructor in our growing department. Meadows Learning Center Leadership Team Grows!

As the Meadows Learning Center continues to focus on the current and future growth, we have adjusted our leadership team to include another manager and a realignment of current management team. We hope that these changes will help everyone on the team know who is managing what and “who’s my boss” – as this was a trending comment from instructors during last season.

  • Mark Fischer has been promoted to Learning Center Adult Manager, managing the Adult Group Lessons, Adult Program Lessons and Clinics, Private Lessons, Adaptive and Night lesson operations.
    • The (2) Day Operations, (1) Night Operations Supervisors will report to Mark.
  • Josey Rice has been promoted to Learning Center Youth Manager, managing the Youth Lesson Operations (CLC and Youth multi-week programs) as well as the administrative functions of the Learning Center.
    • The Children’s Learning Center, Programs and Administrative Supervisors will report to Josey.
  • Communication from Rachel Jones, Program Assistant Manager (Sales Dept) will funnel through Josey and Mark for their specific lesson program (Adults and Youth)
  • Tyler Barnes has been promoted to Learning Center Operations Manager; this role oversees the entire Meadows Learning Center as well as instructor training.
    • Josey and Mark will report to Tyler and Tyler will report directly to Chris Kastner, Director of Resort Operations.
    • The Alpine and Snowboard Training Coordinators will report directly to Tyler in their roles as trainers.

These are subtle but important changes in our department as we prepare for the continued growth of our resort and the Meadows Learning Center. The leadership team remains unchanged but with a renewed focus and cohesiveness. Expect to see a continued emphasis on creating great experiences for both our guests and you as an instructor this upcoming season. The ORG chart is attached if you prefer a more visual representation of our department’s managers and supervisors.

Snow Sports Services becomes Resort Services

Chris Kastner’s position remains the same with some subtle rebranding from Director of Snow Sports Services to Director of Resort Services. This is again to speak more to the year round nature of Mt. Hood Meadows’ business. Chris will continue to oversee the Meadows Learning Center, Race & Events and the Nordic Center, as well as Guest Services and the Rental Center. Lisa Cusick and Michael Birch-Jones will have the title of Resort Services Manager. Michael will also be taking a larger role in Guest Services on Lisa’s days off with Lisa and Michael typically being in the Resort manager on duty role. With this change we thought it appropriate to also give Michael and Lisa the title of “Resort Services Manager.” Ski Check will be moving from lift operations and will be managed by Michael Birch Jones as well.

“Ski Check” is now part of Resort Services

Yes, that’s right – as mentioned above – Resort Services is now in charge of Ski & Snowboard Check taking over from Lift Operations. Meadows Learning Center instructor staff may still be involved with helping get Ski & Snowboard Check setup, however all equipment check staff will report to Michael Birch-Jones. This is a great move and realignment of this important resort service.

Meadows Learning Center Supervisors – Now Hiring!

In case you missed the last email … a majority of our department supervisors have embarked on new adventures. It’s not too soon to start planning for the winter of 2018-19. Come get your 100 days on snow this season as a Meadows Learning Center Supervisor – we are looking for (2) Day Operations Supervisors, (1) Night Operations Supervisor and (1) Children’s Learning Center Supervisor. The management team is reviewing applicants and conducting interviews now with the goal of having all hiring decisions made by August 15 – so apply now if you’re interested. There are also other year-round and various other department positions available. For more information, all the details and to apply go here: https://skihood.com/jobs then click on the Current Openings link.

New Uniforms are coming!

The first order of new uniforms will be arriving before too long. We’ve been in the green DNA parkas and pants now for 7 seasons. We will continue to have a portion of these uniforms in use during the 2018-19 Season with around 50% of new Helly Hansen uniforms. The Meadows Learning Center will still be in green with black pants, and we are anticipating the new uniforms will be super bomber and more water proof – again addressing some of the instructor comments from this season. The entire company will be moving to Helly Hansen uniforms over the next two seasons.

PSIA-AASI Member Dues  were due June 30

If you are a PSIA-AASI member you annual dues were due June 30. Late fees were not being applied until July 10. However, if you are a new member who joined after February 15, 2018 then late fees will not be applied to your membership until September 1, 2018 giving a little more time to renew without being charged late fees. If you were a returning full time instructor this last season and you told us you are returning this upcoming season, then Mt. Hood Meadows paid your dues already. If you were a new full time instructor this season and joined PSIA-AASI in 2018, you should pay your dues yourself, however if you return to Mt. Hood Meadows this Fall as a full time instructor Mt. Hood Meadows will reimburse your dues. If you plan to take advantage of this great benefit available to full time instructors please complete the form on this page: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/current-staff/full-time-instructor-dues-reimbursement

That’s it for now! Have a great rest of your July! Look for another update from us in early August.

Tyler

p.s. Congratulations – you made it all the way down here! You also may have heard, I broke my collarbone SKIING (not Mountain Biking) on Memorial Day weekend – yes, and I even got a sled ride with a patroller I was going to have in a clinic the next weekend – I was able to critique his skiing skills first hand – he was pretty good! Good thing I didn’t miss any of the winter season and I’ll be ready for another epic season at Mt. Hood Meadows in 2018-19. Hope you will too!
