Understanding Shifts – Generally Speaking

Day Shift: Starts at 8:30am (or earlier depending on your daily assignment like Setup, Private or Program Lessons – check the Dayforce app). There are generally 2 lesson times: 9:30am & 1:00pm, and they are generally 2.25 lesson hours depending on scheduled location.

  •  4.5 hours towards your teaching hour commitment
  • Typically 1.25 hours of non-teach hours (morning meeting, line-ups, greeting in meeting areas, etc.)
  • You may be assigned to help with morning setup on this shift which starts at 7:30am and lasts 30 to 60 minutes depending on the current needs of setup (i.e. lesson meeting areas, fencing, Ballroom and Buttercup Fun Zones, shovel brigade, etc.)

Night Shift: Starts at 4:30pm (or earlier – check the Dayforce app for your assignment). 2 group lesson times: 4:45pm (4:30 for Night Owl Private – if assigned) and 6:45PM, for group lessons which are 90 minute lessons. There are some program lessons that start at 6:30pm and go for 2 hours. Start times can vary based on programs running each night.

  •  3.5-4 hours towards your hourly commitment if working 2 evening “daily lessons”
  • 30 to 60 minutes or more of non-teach hours (greeting, line-up, tear down, shovel brigade, etc.)
  • You may be assigned to help with evening tear down on this shift

Additional duties: “Everybody shovels” – You may be asked to do other duties including helping in the rental shop, greeting, clearing snow, and others. These are all vital to smooth operations.

You are responsible for checking your Dayforce schedule to understand when and where you’re expected to work. Missing a shift because you “didn’t know” is detrimental to our operation.

Dayforce Work Assignments

We try to make work assignments no later than 5pm the day before your stated work availability so that you know your assignment sooner than later.

Check and refresh your Dayforce app to confirm changes in your assignment. The following may appear:

  • “Available for Work” – we have not yet made an assignment for you, please standby
  • “Scheduled for __________” – please report for duty at the assigned location (Programs, Children, Adults, etc.) on time and ready to work
  • “No Work Available” – you do NOT need to report for duty for that shift

If your assignment still says “Available to Work” at 5:30pm, please contact us at skischoolsupervisors@skihood.com to confirm your schedule. Sometimes we make errors or something has changed last minute.

Please note that we do NOT use the “Availability” feature in Dayforce, so please DO NOT use this feature in the Dayforce App as it does not pertain to our operation. If you have been assigned a work assignment on a day that you’ve made yourself available, you will most likely be teaching.

Calling in – I’m sick

If you are not feeling 100% well, please let us know as far in advance as possible. This prevents “calling off” someone else, who was available and wanted teach during this shift.

Calling in sick (for any reason) is as much about being conscientious and supporting other instructors as it is “following the rules”. When instructors don’t show up for work, it makes the lesson experience for other instructors more challenging and less ideal for our guests. Please think ahead if you need to reschedule a shift for a different reason and be courteous to your teammates.

Instructor Commitment Levels

Full Time - 4 to 5 Shifts per Week

Shift Commitment:  usually 5 day shifts per week or about 35 to 40 hours per week.

Flexibility: Ideally, work days are set for the season with the ability to revise as needed (i.e. Fri-Tue, or Wed-Sun)

Total Teaching Hours: Most full time instructors accumulate more than 300 teaching hours per season, but also have many non-teaching hours too.

Pass Value: Individual All Access season pass for self and dependent(s).

Examples:

First Season, Full-time

  • Friday through Tuesday day shifts = 5 day shifts (or scheduled for 40 hours per week)
  • Wednesday through Sunday day shifts = 5 day shifts (or scheduled for 40 hours per week)
  • Monday through Friday day shifts = 5 day shifts (or scheduled for 40 hours per week)
  • Thursday night, Friday day & night, Saturday day, and Sunday day = 5 shifts (or scheduled for 34 hours per week)

Returning / Experienced Full-time

  • May work a minimum of 4 day shifts, but ideally 5 shifts
  • Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday day shifts = 4 day shifts (or scheduled 32 hours per week)
  • Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday (split days off)
  • Or any combination of day and night shifts with supervisor approval

Part Time - 24 Shifts - 60 teaching hours

Shift Commitment: 24 weekend, holiday AND/OR multi-week program shifts

Flexibility: Schedule is set for the season. Calling out sick can be made up for other weekend shifts. Program shifts require commitment to all days in each program (every Saturday of January for SnoBlasters for example).

Teaching Hour Goal: 60 hours

Pass Value: Individual All Access season pass for self and dependent(s)

Note: Teach a minimum of (1) 2-hour lesson every scheduled shift for 3 shifts, then teach (2) 2-hour lessons on 4th shift = usually will meet the 60 teaching-hour goal

Part Time - 18 Shifts - 45 teaching hours

Shift Commitment: 18 weekend, Holiday (Christmas Break, MLK Jr. Day, President’s Day) AND/OR multi-week program shifts (weekends or mid-week)

Flexibility: Schedule is set for the season. Program shifts require commitment to all days in each program (every Saturday of January for SnoBlasters for example)

Teaching Hour Goal: 45 hours per season

Pass Value: Individual All Access season pass for self w/ option to purchase dependent passes for $100/pass.

Note: Teach a minimum of (1) 2-hour lesson every scheduled shift for 3 shifts, then teach (2) 2-lessons on 4th shift usually meets 45 teaching hour goal

Part Time - 10 Shift - 28 teaching hours

Teaching Hour Goal: 28 hours per season

Lift Benefit Considerations for 10 Shift Special Use:

  • Teaching requirement requires contribution on peak days of 4 hours (or a minimum of 2 lessons)
  • Season goal of 28 teaching hours will enable management to monitor productivity
  • Continued seasonal participation is contingent on meeting goal
  • We will add additional access for day of duty if current pass doesn’t allow (i.e. Value Pass holder)
  • Other team member benefits (like meal discounts) added to personal pass

Examples:

Team Member has purchased a Value Pass and is scheduled to work on MLK Jr. Day. We would add access to their value pass for that scheduled day when they report for duty that morning.

10 Shift - Special Use

Shift Commitment: 10 weekend days in January, February, March, holidays, or other peak day shifts

Pick-Up a Shift – Earn a “Work a Day Voucher”

Sometimes we have higher needs than we have instructors scheduled and will request additional help via email or SMS messaging. If you “pick up” this shift, you will earn a “Work a Day Voucher” which is an unlimited day ticket which may be given to a friend or family member. You may not sell a “Work a Day Voucher”.

How to receive a “Work A Day” voucher:

  • Requested “Pick-Up” shifts can only be an already unscheduled shift
  • If you show up for a requested shift but don’t get a lesson, you still earn a ticket
  • Shift must be scheduled in advance – unscheduled/unsolicited days do not qualify
  • Requested shifts do not apply to the originally submitted schedule (i.e. if you’re already scheduled on the day we need more help this down not earn you a voucher)
  • You may exchange a scheduled day for your Pick-Up shift, but this does not earn you a voucher since it would then be considered a scheduled day. It does count towards your teaching hour commitment. Use the Schedule Change Request Form

You should email your managers and confirm a voucher has been added to your profile in our resort sales system. Vouchers may be redeemed at the Sahale Sales desk with or without you being present.
