Safety Chat – Many Topics
Sunny weather protocols. It’s been sunny lately and will be this weekend. All instructors (and students) should have eye-protection (sun glasses or goggles), wear sunscreen and gloves. If you have a CLC youth lesson we have loaner goggles for kids. Adult students are on their own for eye protection however there are goggles for sale at the Sahale Sales desk. Gloves are mandatory for students and instructors. Fingers are easily pinched when handling gear, helping students into their skis/boards, etc. – wear your gloves even when it’s warm out. If you are doing setup in the morning – wear gloves!
Where to go with your students. Everyone has been doing great following our policy at the top of Buttercup – go right around the top lift shack. This is a much less crowded route and is not as steep – and allows for classes to spread out before going down the slope. Please do NOT stop in the narrow spot between the top shack and the trees … this blocks access for other classes. If you continue beyond the “ski under” rope line and find a spot to group up with your class that allows other classes to navigate safely by/past your class, that is the courteous thing to do.
How to use space efficiently. When using our learning terrain at Ballroom Carpet, please keep your class tight when grouping up. If you line up your students across the whole run you are creating a safety hazard for your students and others. Please stack your classes vertically when at all possible.
Adult Snowboard Lessons – Buttercup option. If you have an adult snowboard lesson there is some really good teaching terrain near and around the bottom of Buttercup. There are some flats, gentle first glide slopes and some traversing terrain at the bottom of the Buttercup Fun Zone slope. If you are looking for some “out of the way” and less congested teaching terrain, these locations are for you! Plus when your students have mastered some traversing skills, they are already at Buttercup! What a fun opportunity to take them up Buttercup and practice traversing there where it’s not so flat. Try it out – you might like it!
Buttercup Learning Terrain
Park grooming crew built out the Buttercup Learning Terrain where Shipyard terrain park used to be. There are rollers at the top, banked turns, an open (gentle) slope in the middle, plus the route outside the Buttercup Learning Terrain is an “adventure run” that is actually less steep than the main Buttercup slope – please use these terrain options this weekend (and into the future) now that we have it available to us. If we don’t use them, then they will be reverted back to alternate uses. It will take some time to get used to using this terrain, but do take advantage of this option even if it’s a bit more work to get there – it will pay off in fun and adventure for your students.

Evening Instructors – Get a Parking Sticker
If you are consistently working just night lessons, especially on weekends, please get a parking pass sticker. We have been experiencing full parking lots on weekends and the main lot not opening up by the time some evening team members are arriving. You must have a parking pass sticker on your car to bypass a road block (after stopping and saying “hi” and “thank you for you being here and doing this difficult but important job” – then show them your sticker, have some small talk, and thank them again – then proceed. To get a parking sticker, please download and complete one using the following link: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/96/2022/01/Employee-Parking-Pass-Request-Form.pdf – this is not to be used on personal days and this form must be signed by a MLC manager who will confirm you typically work nights.
Training Opportunities – Clinic Titles vs. Clinic Content
When checking the clinic and training calendar the title may not tell you everything you need to know about the clinic. Please click on the title and then read the clinic description as you might find that the clinic is not what you thought. All clinics are open to all instructors as we want everyone to gain more knowledge and get some more tools to make your teaching day even more successful and easy. Check the clinic calendar and descriptions here: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/calendar
Introducing New Supervisors
Per the email I sent previously about Supervisor positions available for our growing department at one of the last “indy” resorts of our size … we’ve filled those positions with some awesome people.
Reishelle Hoeschen has accepted the position of Private & Adaptive Lesson Supervisor! She will be helping us with all aspects of the Private & Adaptive Lesson reservations as well as connecting students with instructors at the Private Lesson meeting area as well as Adaptive Lessons. Reishelle was already working as a Guest Services Lead assisting with private lesson booking so she’ll be an easy transition to the MLC and get to spend more time on snow! Her previous experience outside of Mt. Hood Meadows is well suited to this role and we’re super excited to have her be part of the team!
James Ronnow has accepted the position of Program Tech Supervisor and will be supervising the Program Lesson Equipment Teching working closely with Shannon Malamphy and Jenn Wass with the program lesson operations. James has already been jumping in and helping in the Sahale Rental Center as well as helping out in a related capacity with program lessons. He brings strong process and organization skills to the role from his previous experience in the hospitality and outdoor retailer industry, and we’re stoked to leverage these skills in the MLC.
Please help me welcome these top individuals in these new positions in the MLC. They are here to help support our operations and you in your role as an instructor. Be sure to introduce yourself to them and make them feel part of the family.
Recognition – You’re awesome!
We have been finally getting on-line guest comments from your students. Below are some of the highlights! Be sure to hand out guest satisfaction surveys at the end of your lesson when you’re summarizing the successes and continued practice time opportunities with your students. Hand out your business card and tip envelope, too! There are quite a few tips in Josey’s office waiting for you – we try to text message you if you have received a tip.
About Paul: We spent the day at Cooper Spur, and as I was unable to find any opportunity to review our day there, thought I’d come here. I wanted to single out Paul L. (“Pilot Paul”) for special praise for his magnificent lesson with our 9 year old daughter.
About Pranay: Had a wonderful adult ski lesson with Pranay Subba. Pranay delivered an excellent ski lesson, observed my skills and personalized the guidance and activities step by step with alignment of my personal progress pace. It was a great day on the mountain, and I gained skills that will make future great days on the mountain. Thank you!
About Brian (and me in rentals – hahaha): A huge thank you to Tyler Barnes in rentals. He walked us over to our private lessons today and gave us very helpful advice and was overall very friendly. Brian Beardsley was a phenomenal instructor. Very patient and helpful. Thank you for a great experience!
About Adrian: Adrian, a wonderful instructor. The lesson was so much fun, probably the best I’ve had. Adrian was so patient with both my brother and I, and the two hours felt like five minutes. The lesson helped me improve my ski skills a few levels up.
About Rose: My teacher Rose was fantastic. Only my second time on downhill skis and she had me cruising down buttercup with confidence and control by the end of the lesson. Just a great experience overall, I can’t wait to come back.
Hope to see you this weekend enriching your lives and the lives or our guests!
Tyler
