Hello MLC & Nordic Instructors!

Happy End of the Year! Today, Mt. Hood Express and Shooting Star opened and the surface conditions over on Shooting Star were quite good. It was nice to get some more terrain open, but the terrain getting back from Shooting Star was not quite as good, so please be careful until we get more snow. We did fill the Main parking lot and the Sunrise parking lot today, so please plan on longer than normal travel times to the mountain, take the team member shuttle, or if you are driving, leave early!

Call-ins and Shift Changes – do this on the Portal

We’ve had quite a few different ways of instructors letting us know that they can’t make a shift or want to change a shift. The only approved method, which was covered in the Nuts & Bolts Training, is to use the links on the homepage of the MLC Instructor Portal. If you just email or text message to Claire or Jesse or someone else on our days off, then no one will know you’re not coming. By using the links on the Portal, or even clicking/tapping on these buttons below, and filling out the form – this will alert all supervisors and managers who are working. Please use the Portal to call in or request a schedule change.

Team Teach Information

The team teach is not mandatory but is an extremely helpful transition to teaching independently.  Any of you have showed up for Team Teach lessons and been turned away because of a lack of lessons. We’ve been creating additional training sessions for those who have missed out. At this point, given all the training you have had, if you are nervous about independent teaching, please review the Delivering the Beginner Experience E-Learning Course on THESNOWPROS.ORG website that you took prior to coming to First Season Instructor Training and the First Time Experience Goals sheet for Alpine and Snowboard.

If you an experience instructor, working with a First Season Instructor during a Team Teach, then intent is that the First Season Instructor leads the lesson and you are there as a co-pilot, helping with the lesson (but not taking over). You two should be collaborating and creating an amazing experience for our lessons guests and each other. Our seasoned instructors would also benefit from reviewing the First Time Experience Goals too.

Shift Commitment & Teaching Hours

Many of you have asked about your shift commitment and teaching hours. We understand that the slow start to the season may impact your ability to meet the minimum teaching hour commitment this season. We will review the number of “No Work Available” shifts you had committed to working but we called you off when reviewing your cumulative teaching hours this season. If you have committed to a day that we called you off, this counts towards one of your shifts towards your commitment. The snow will come and there will be opportunities to enrich the lives our guests in lessons this season – don’t worry – just be a little more patient.

In-House Freestyle Accreditation (Paid)

For all instructors who want to take students into The Zoo, we have a mandatory In-House Freestyle Accreditation clinic. This clinic and following quiz are required before taking any students into the Zoo. Please check the Clinic and Training Calendar on the Instructor Portal linked here. This is a PAID clinic running midweek and on the weekends color coded in bright green on the clinic calendar. For those instructors that completed the on-snow clinic and quiz last season, you are not required to take the on-snow portion again this season. Just complete the quiz and come grab a sticker.”

Returning Instructor – Holiday Vouchers

If you are a part-time or full-time returning instructor, we have an envelope for you in Josey’s office down in the MLC Admin area in the basement of the South Lodge … with some lift ticket vouchers that you may share with a friend or family member. These vouchers are connected to your user account in our resort sales system and are trackable. Please do not post these for sale on Craigslist for sale – they are meant to be for you to gift to someone.
