Hello MLC Instructors!
It’s been an awesome week so far. Cascade Express opened, we had nearly 100 kids in the CLC, we rolled out “Station Teaching” for Adult First Time and Novice Lessons, we had 25 instructors attend the Level I Certification indoor session, the mini carpet opened at the bottom of Buttercup – what else? – it was a great week so far! Here are some important details about the coming days…
8:45am Mandatory Meeting – Every day moving forward this season!
Whether you’re working in the Children’s Learning Center or Adult Group Lessons – we have a mandatory 8:45am meeting each day Monday – Sunday, 7 days per week. This meeting is to provide consistency from day to day. So every day you work there is an 8:45am meeting either in the CLC or out on snow at the Adult Lesson Meeting Area, depending on where you are assigned. This is where you “check in” with a supervisor to make sure you are here and possibly will be assigned early morning, non-teaching duties.
Mandatory Adult Meeting & Station Teaching Mini-Clinic @ 8:45am
From now until January 5 we will be conducting an 8:45am meeting and mini-clinic that runs until 9:25am each day. The purpose of this meeting and mini-clinic is to take attendance and go over the struggles and successes of Station Teaching at Adult Group Lessons. This is mandatory paid training each day until Jan. 5. Come in your civilian clothes (if you want to take a hot lap after the mini-clinic) or in your uniform – either way is OK, but know that some of you will be asked to get started working right after the mini-clinic. If you are assigned to Adult Group Lessons report to the Adult Lesson Meeting Area at 8:45am each day ready to ski or snowboard.
Complete Your Timesheet Before Leaving for the Day
It is a requirement that you complete your timesheet BEFORE you leave for the day. We need your time submitted for the day, at the end of the day, every day. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Those who violate this policy are subject to water boarding and public humiliation. We are paying you to complete your timesheets, so do it before you leave every day. If you’re scared or don’t know how just ask Chris Hudson or any of your other team mates – they’ll show you how!
Ballroom Carpet Maze Lane Protocol
Please use the lane with the new fancy signs that say, “This lane lessons only please.” This is the middle lane at Ballroom Carpet. The inner lane is for non-lesson guests only – no lessons are to use this lane. The outer lane is for Private Lessons only where the maze splits right in the middle. Instructors are stationed in the middle to help control the flow. Please be respectful of your team mates and only use the “Lessons only lane” even if the “public lane” is empty. Using the public lane is just like taking cuts in front of your instructor team mates. Boooo!
Skiing and Riding “On the Clock”
You may only ski and snowboard in uniform while on official work duties. “Free runs” in uniform are not allowed. When I am skiing and riding on the clock I also behave differently. As John Bain, Mountain Safety Manager, would say, “When I’m on the clock I’m scoping the lines I want to ski tomorrow. On my day off I ski those lines.” Skiing and riding on the clock means you are extra careful to slow down in slow zones, help guests that need assistance, and be an ambassador of stoke. Think for a moment what might not be acceptable behavior either on or off the clock – and most certainly don’t do these things while on duty.
There’s a whole bunch more I can share, but let’s keep it short – good advice for teaching people. Shakespeare said in Act 2, Scene 2 of Hamlet, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” Take some time to consider how much verbal information you share before letting your students “just do it.” Cut to the chase, less talk – more rock, and as Don Ball would say, “Shut up and ski.” Sharing too much information before allowing someone to do it is … not good teaching.
See you soon – and thank you for all YOU DO!
