Hello MHM Pros!

Here’s the latest from Mt. Hood! It’s been a great week so far, with some sunny days on Monday and Tuesday and with new snow falling right now! I’m going on a ride-along tomorrow morning (early) with Garrett Hemmer, our learning terrain area cat operator, and hope to have something new and exciting to use at Ballroom Carpet this weekend. We only have a 6 more nights for evening clinics and lessons, so sign up to teach and attend what clinics are left. After we are operating during days only, we’ll be offering clinics at 1:15pm for the rest of the season.

Here’s what you need to know this weekend …

Northwest Association for Blind Athletes

This group will be here Saturday and Sunday. If you’d like to help out with enriching visually impaired athletes then this is a great opportunity. Looks like we need 7 ski instructors and 3 snowboarder instructors to help with these lessons on Saturday and 6 ski instructors and 2 snowboard instructors on Sunday. Meet athletes in the rental shop around 9am. Lessons start at 10am and end around 12:30pm or 1pm. If you are interested in working with these athletes please email Mark.Fischer@skihood.com

Toyota Learn to Ski and Ride Nights

We’ve been needing extra help on Saturday nights. We will be needing 6 more ski instructors and 6 more snowboard instructors to provide the best experience for these guests this Saturday night. If you have called in sick or need to make up a shift, this a great opportunity and the weather looks excellent for this weekend’s Toyota Nights Special, so please signup to work by adding a shift here: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/schedule-change-requests

Additional March Nights – March 16, 17 and 18

We are extending night operations to include the nights of Friday March 16, Saturday March 17 and Sunday March 18. We will be needing 4 alpine and 4 snowboard instructors on March 16 and March 18. The final Toyota Learn to Ski and Ride Night is March 17 and we expect it to be BIG. We’ll be needing 8 each in alpine and snowboard for the night of March 17. Please sign up to work by adding shifts here: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/schedule-change-requests

Cooper Spur Instructors Needed This Weekend

We are looking for 2 alpine and 2 snowboard instructors to work at Cooper Spur this weekend. This is an “all day” shift – you are paid your teaching wage the whole day. If you want to have an awesome time in a low-key, family environment please send an email to Mark.Fischer@skihood.com so we can schedule you for Cooper Spur this weekend!

Instructor Comments

Another great week of comments for your students!

·         Ryan (Colsesar) was great. I wish I could remember his last name. He is from Hood River ad in his mid 20’s. We really improved thanks to his help and patience.

·         Inga was really nice! Very encouraging and supportive. She made the lesson fun and the few falls that I had seem not so bad! 🙂

·         Marissa was great. I can’t think of any criticism. She had a very positive and friendly attitude.

·         Aiden – She was absolutely fabulous. Easy to talk to and lots of guiding! I hope to see her again!

·         Parker – Great instructors. Saw a big improvement

·         Kevin and Clifford – I felt like I was put in the perfect situations for both classes. I did ski a little bit 25 years ago but I was in the first-time class in the morning with Kevin because it had been so long. I felt like our class progressed quickly so I was never bored. I was lucky enough to get Clifford to myself in the afternoon in a green class so I was able to go on some fun runs with his positive yet instructive feedback. It was a very enjoyable day despite blizzard conditions.

Upcoming Level I Exams

We have quite a few signed up to take the Snowboard and Alpine Level I exams on March 18 – the deadline has passed to sign for this exam. However, we would like to schedule an Alpine and Snowboard Level I exam in April, but we need 3 people per exam group to conduct the exam. Louis has spoken to a few people about the Snowboard exam and has 3 people, but I need to know who you are and what day will work for you! If there are any Alpine instructors who have not yet taken their level I and want to do so this year, please get 3 people together and let me know. The week/weekend of April 7 or April 21 seems like viable dates.

Alpine & Snowboard – Level II & Level III – Exam Reminders

The PSIA-NW Alpine and Snowboard exams are coming up! You must complete the written exam 30 days prior to the on-snow modules. Even if you’re on the fence about taking the on-snow modules, you may take the written any time and it’s “good for life”. Stevens Pass has the only Snowboard Level III exam coming up on March 31 – April 1, and Alex Pugliese is already signed up! Wish her luck! Alpine and Snowboard Level II exams are happening at Schweitzer on March 24-25, and Stevens Pass on March 31-April 1 and April 2-3, as well as the final exam of the season at Mt. Hood Meadows on April 14-15. Check here for details: https://www.psia-nw.org/events/

Adaptive & Telemark Exams

There are some Adaptive and Telemark exams happening this season too. Check the PSIA-NW Event calendar for details:

MHM Scholarships

Mt. Hood Meadows has a scholarship program that helps our instructors attend PSIA-NW Certification Exams, Specialist Accreditations and Educational Events. The financial support is for the registration fees associated with the PSIA-NW event you wish to attend. Our scholarship monies do not cover personal expenses like travel, food or lodging. If you’d like to apply for a scholarship please get the details here: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/current-staff/scholarship-information

Hey, the pig stories are a little light this week, since I was gone for a few days at Stevens Pass I missed all the stories, but the pig looks a bit more full for some reason. I did hear from Mark Fisher that even Brian Beardsley paid the pig, but apparently the reason why is, “going to the grave!” Maybe ask Brian yourself!
