Hello MLC Instructors!
Here we go! It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Weekend with all schools being out on Monday. The weather is looking positive for a very busy weekend. Last Sunday’s SnoBlaster/Trail Blazer/ and all multi-week programs were postponed until this Sunday – yes the program start date is Sunday 1/19/2020. Last Saturday’s programs did run and this weekend is the second weekend of Saturday Programs. It is going to be a busy weekend – please leave early; catch the early bus or if you’re driving please get into the main parking lot by 7:30am to reduce the risk of being diverted to Sunrise Parking Lot – which adds another 30 minutes to your arrival time.
See you at the mandatory 7:45am SnoBlaster Meeting (7:30am for the voluntary group warm up) or the 8:45am CLC/Adult/Outdoor Program Meeting. Be sure to check your Dayforce app for your assignment when you arrive – this assignments can change up to the morning of your work due to call outs, so be sure to check your assignment again before reporting to your mandatory meeting.
There’s more – please read on …

Cooper Spur is Open! We need 1 or 2 more instructors to teach at Cooper Spur
We could use 1 snowboard and 1 alpine instructor at Cooper Spur Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Currently there are 3 instructors who work down at Cooper Spur each weekend, but we’re looking for 1 more dual discipline instructor to fill in the gaps and enrich the lives of our Cooper Spur guests, not only this weekend but for the rest of the season. If you are a dual discipline instructor that’s even better – but you must be able to teach Alpine and have alpine gear! Please reach out Josey or Tyler to schedule your Cooper Spur shifts.
COOPER SPUR LESSON SCHEDULE – Saturdays and Sundays & Holidays: Private Lessons are offered at 9am and 3pm; Group Lessons are offered at 10:30am and 1pm. Most instructors who work at Cooper Spur get 6+ hours of teaching, plus additional hours. It’s a fun place to teach, so please let us know if you’d like to teach at Cooper Spur!
MLK Jr Weekend – Sunday + Monday + Monday Rotary Night
Sunday and Monday are looking really busy! And Monday program lessons skip 1/20 but regardless we will be VERY BUSY. We are hoping to add 12 Alpine and 5 Snowboard instructors to the roster on both Sunday and Monday. If these are NOT a scheduled days for you and you pick up either of these days you’ll earn a voucher for a lift ticket to share with a family member or friend. I’m going to make it really easy – just “reply all” to this email if you can make it on Sunday and/or Monday – please specific the day(s) you’d like to pick up.
The Rotary Club of Hood River presents Rotary Night on 1/20 at Mt. Hood Meadows to generate funds for the Rotary Club Charitable Foundation. Request the night off, arrange for car-pooling and ski your heart out for a good cause. Season pass holders are welcome, and your passes will be valid until 9 PM. Tickets are $20 online in advance or $25 at the resort. We will have lessons going out on Monday evening and already have pre-sold lessons as of today, so get ready to teach on Monday night, too.
End of Pay Period – 1/17
Today is the end of the pay period. You should have all your time in already if you’re not working today. But if for some reason you forgot to complete a Time Sheet for a previous work day in this pay period, please do it now. It is your responsibility to complete your own time sheets both accurately and on time – at the end of the shift you worked. This also means that if you are working a Day Shift and Night Shift on the same day, please complete your Day Shift time at the end of that shift.
Extremely Difficult Terrain Safety Protocols – On-line Paid Training (30 minutes)
Meadows Learning Center instructors and Freeride Team coaches will have students and athletes from time to time that will want to access these types of terrain as part of their education. This course is a prerequisite to accessing our extremely difficult terrain – all gated terrain in Heather Canyon – as well as any runs with closely spaced trees (e.g. HRM Trees, Mitchell Creek Woods, Fairy Land, Waterfall, etc.). If you plan to take students of any age into these areas you must complete this course. Take the course here: https://mhm.snowproportal.com/courses/extremely-difficult-terrain-safety-protocols
I Forgot My Pass Information
If you forgot your pass – on a day you work or a day you’re up here to free ski – please got to Human Resources to get a “I forgot my pass” pass. This pass is NOT a day pass – it is a fully functional replacement season pass, which will work not only on the day you forgot your pass but any future day too! But what about my “real” season’s pass that I forgot at home? That pass is also good – access switches automatically when you scan your pass from your replacement “I forgot my pass” pass BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL PASS and vice versa – this automatic switch can happen only once per day. So save that “I forgot my pass” pass for another day – maybe leave it in your car, or in your back pack – don’t throw it out – it’s still good for the next time you forget your pass. Don’t keep both passes on you at the same time as this will be a huge FAIL at the gate. Please try to limit the times that you forget your pass as the media actually costs us $2. Multiply that by 1,200 team members and all the season pass holders and you can see this is a real expense. I hope this sheds some light on the “I forgot my pass” pass/
Kyle Donahue Presentation Tonight
Kyle is a MLC Instructor, Alpine instructor of the year (2018-19) and an avid adventurer. He spent 6 months living in Mongolia (of all places) and will share his stories of living in one of the most remote places on earth (that I’ve ever heard of…). He’s got stories to tell – and pictures! You might be interested in attending. I’m at home today, but will be driving out from Hood River if anyone can use a ride there, or back.

Meet Jerry the Pig – You Owe the Pig!
Here’s how it works … If you are in your “greens” and crash you must, “Pay the Pig!” If you have a “cling-on” on Easy Rider you … “Pay the Pig!” If you say to your College Program class students, “Watch this!” and then proceed to crash and need your student to grab your skis (yes that was me) you … “Pay the Pig … Big Time!” It’s on the honor system and you pay what you can afford. And sometimes you may feel like no one saw you crash – you got up pretty fast and brushed off all that snow – for sure I’m good no one saw (but you know you owe Jerry) … and then you hear, way off in the distance … “Pay… The… Pig!” from a fellow instructor. Even our students got involved as they heard the story – it’s catchy!

A Note About Saturday January 14, 2020 Operations
Mother Nature shared her power with us last Saturday and the guest experienced, despite all our best efforts, did not meet the expectations that we, as a team, want for our guests. We sent an email message to all guests who came to Mt. Hood Meadows last Saturday who were hoping for “A best day Ever” experience, and those who purchased any lift ticket, rental or lesson product we let them know that we put a “comp” of the exact product they purchased on their customer profile. The weather is not anyone’s fault, but Mt. Hood Meadows wants everyone who comes to our mountain home to have an amazing experience. So the idea of inviting everyone back for another day – on us – was the right thing to do. I wanted to share this with our team so you know how Mt. Hood Meadows rolls as a company, so you can be proud of where you work and play.
That is all. See you this weekend!
