Hello all.
Happy October. The mountain has a new dusting of snow on its top and its starting to smell like winter up here at 5,336 ft. I know many of you are impatiently waiting for the snow to fly, just as we are. Start doing your Snow Dances for La Nina and hopefully she will show up a little early this year so we can make some turns before it gets busy.

NEW THIS SEASON
50 for 50 – You can earn money for having your friends work with you. Current employees can earn $50 for each person they recruit. The new person must become an employee and after 50 days of the new employee first day of work, the current employee earns $50.
Turns 4 Tenants – I am pleased to announce a new housing incentive program the Human Resources team has been working on: Turns 4 Tenants (T4T). You can visit the informational page here: https://www.skihood.com/about-us/turns-for-tenants and check out the details yourself. Here’s the basic gist: The T4T program incentivizes homeowners and landlords to list their rental with T4T. Those that follow the application and program process and are successful at renting to an employee qualify for a free season pass or ten lift tickets.
Wage Matrix –
Chris, Jeremy and Mark have been working tirelessly on updating our wages and we now have a new Wage Matrix for our instructors. Please see the attached worksheet for your new wages starting at the beginning of the season. Below is a message from Chris Kastner to explain the new Wage Commissions.
Hello everyone,
Feel the chill? As summer is wrapping up and with winter season coming just around the corner, we wanted to follow up with the good news that we had sent you at the end of the season in regards to instructor wage increases for this coming year. As you may remember, the average teaching rate for part time instructors next season will be moving up 9.85% and the average full time teaching rate will be increasing 25.04%. As we had mentioned at the time, we were going to spend the summer analyzing private lesson commission and wages for non-teaching duties.
After speaking with a few instructors and supervisors about our proposal, we believe that we have come up with a fair and equitable increase for private lessons commissions.
As you will see, we will no longer be paying commissions on assigned private lessons, but will be paying all instructors the same wage whether they are teaching a group lesson or a private lesson. We believe this will help in two ways; it recognizes the fact that an instructor teaching a group lesson has a lot more to account for than a private lesson. It also allows the private lesson instructor the opportunity to teach a group lesson without feeling that they are losing out by doing so. We have significantly increased the amount paid for requested privates over last season rewarding instructors who have created great relationships with our guests. The difference is shown in the 2016.17 Private Commission Comparison pfd. also attached. With this matrix comes many questions and it is our goal to help everyone understand our thought process.
Our goal with this adjustment in the private commissions was not to change the amount we were paying in commissions to instructors but to concentrate that amount entirely on request privates instead of splitting it between assigned and request. Below is an example comparison of how it would work this year vs. last year. The example below is for a level 2 instructor who taught 10 hours of privates of which 33.34% were requests or 3.33 of the hours were request. You can see the commission for the 6.67 hours that were assigned would have been $30 last season and this season will be $0. The commission on the hours that are request would have been $25.84 last season and this season will be $55.84 this season. So in the scenario where an instructor has an average private request rate they will make the same commissions as last season. If someone has a higher request rate they will actually make more than last season. The attached 2016.17 Private Commission Comparision.pdf contains a more complete comparison as well as comparison showing the commission difference if the instructor request rate was 50% instead of 33.34%
Other wage adjustments for this coming season;
· Non-teaching wages will increase from $9.25 last season to $10.00 at the start of this season. Minimum wage increases to $9.75 in January 2017
· An additional $.50/ hour paid for all CLC and Kid’s 3 day camp instructors teaching beginner or novice classes (does not include program classes)
· What does remain is the $3.00 per student upgrade commission paid to instructors who have upgraded guests from a 2 to a 4 hour lesson
I will be out of the office until the first week of October but I am more than happy to answer any questions that you might have upon my return.
Please keep an eye out for the next instructor update announcing other great events, dates and much, much more coming out shortly.
Can’t wait to see everyone!
