This information is provided to help you navigate the steps of becoming a Nordic Cross country Instructor at Meadows Nordic Center

If you have any questions after following the steps below be sure to ask your trainers. Certification is not a requirement and is an individual choice. Take the steps necessary to get certified if you choose – it’s up to you.

 

Step 1: Sign up as a New Hire Instructor at Meadows Nordic center

  1. This can be done at an early season Job Fair at Meadows or by contacting the Nordic manager David Mackintosh. at david.mackintosh@skihood.com or calling (541)400-6300
  2. You must do Onboarding for Mount Hood Meadows (Pd Training 90 min) in order to get paid and get on the roster  Instructions?

Step 2: Take these 2 free Learning Course from PSIA

  1. Log On PSIA-AASI
  2.  Click on Login
  3. Click on nonmember free account and register
  4. Click on E-Learning tab to get access to all Free E-Learning courses
  5. Add these items (Course for New Instructors, Delivering the Beginner Experience Cross Country ) to your cart and checkout (there will be no charge). The system will send you a link with details on how to take the course (paid Training 90 min each course)
  6. At the end of each course please submit to Mt Hood Meadows bill.hoffer@skihood so I can record it. You can also save a PDF certificate for your own records.
  7. You will have access to all free lessons if you remember your password for logging in

Step 3: Shadow 2 classic and 2 skate lessons given by a PSIA certified Instructor

  1. Shadow 2 Classic lessons and/or 2 Skate lessons from PSIA Certified instructors (Pd Training 2 hrs each session)
  2. Additional Shadowing as you feel is needed but unpaid
  3. Be shadowed first time teach by a Trainer to be cleared to teach Teach Classic and/or Skate
  4. A New Hire can be approved to teach Classic and/or Skate.  We do more classic so most start here first   You will get the teaching rate once you have been approved to teach Classic and/or Skate
  5. Periodic Teaching will be Shadowed by Trainers throughout the Season as a Check in.

Step 4: Pre-Season Startup Recommended

  1.  MLC Welcome Home (Paid Training 6 hrs)
  2.  On Snow training (Paid Training 6 hrs)
  3. Welcome to attend all clinics and all disciplines offered by MLC and Nordic Center

Step 6: Instructor Responsibilities at the Nordic Center

All Instructors are required to help with the other duties at Nordic Center as needed (Pd at Instructor Rate). You will
get hands on training as the season starts and we try to post on our White Board (or as needed) what you are assigned to help with besides lesson or shadowing assignments. All these tasks are done in Uniform with a nametag. These tasks may include:

  1. Daily set up and breakdown to include; Shoveling, Signs at road crossing and around
    Nordic Center, Tables and Rack set up for our guests
  2. Trail Maintenance includes; removing obstacles or flagging them on the trail, leveling
    out trail surfaces and making sure signs are visible. Inspecting trails and giving assistance to guests on the trails.
  3. Help with handing out and return of Rentals and Waxing of rentals during the day, when not teaching
  4. Help with Guest Services such as welcoming guests and giving them directions, helping them to sign in and do liability paperwork. Encouraging them to scan their passes once a day so we can log in visits to show our attendance
  5. Anytime you are working you will have your Uniform on with a nametag that guests can see! Your pass is good for points and employee discounts, and we should all go through the scan gate at least once a day (it only registers once a day)
  6. Free skiing is only allowed out of uniform
