Lift Safety
Part of our role as an instructor is to teach not only how to ski or snowboard but also how to safely load, ride and unload a chairlift.
There are a variety of different chair lifts at Mt. Hood Meadows, each with their own distinct features to know, understand and convey to your students
How to prepare your students for a safe chairlift ride:
- Watch other groups load
- Practice Chair – All instructors must use the Practice Chair if available before taking students on the chairlift
- Chair Lift Bar – All instructors who are on duty must lower the restraining device on the chairlift
- Signs
- Load Here
- Prepare to Unload –  …. does not mean raise the bar
- Raise Bar Here – Raise the bar after crossing the “ski under” rope line and as near to unloading as possible
- Unload Here – Easy rhyme for kids to remember: “1 – 2 – 3 (raise the bar) – Let’s go ski!”
- Lift Attendants/Operators
- Using the “thumbs down” when approaching the top lift shack to signal you need a Slow Unload

- Use LIFT STARS
