The Junior Instructor Program is for high school aged students who are 14 to 17 years of age.

All minor applicants go through the same application process, however those who are 16 or 17 years of age may “test out” of the Junior Program to full instructor. Those who are 14 and 15 years of age will be Junior Instructors until they turn 16, at which time they are eligible to “test out” to full instructor.

Position Overview 

This position is responsible for assisting with teaching skiing and/or snowboarding to groups and individuals of all ages at Mt. Hood Meadows and Cooper Spur Mountain Resort, while assisting with other functions of the Resort Services Departments (Meadows Learning Center, Rental Center, Guest Services, Daycare, and Equipment Check).

Qualifications & Experience

  • 14 to 17 years of age
  • Successful completion of on-line PSIA-AASI E-Learning Courses
  • Passion for teaching and the mountain environment
  • Strong communications skills and guest services skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Must have sight, speech and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills, follow and provide directions and instruction to guests
  • Basic internet navigation and email response skills
  • Must provide own equipment (e.g. Skis/Boards/Boots)
  • Minimum ability to ski and/or snowboard on blue groomed terrain at Mt. Hood Meadows
  • Able to commit to work a minimum of 10 shifts plus training days consisting primarily of weekends, national holidays and school holidays.

Functions and Responsibilities

Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with Teaching Group Lessons
  • Work with youth students ages 4 to 14
  • Help create a safe and fun learning environment
  • Provide excellent guest service as outlined in training
  • Attend meetings and be responsible for meeting information to assist with serving our guests
  • Greet guests, answer their questions and direct them to correct locations
  • Attend mandatory and voluntary clinics regularly to improve skiing/riding and teaching skills
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors including but not limited to, pre-operation setup, greeting guests, boot fitting, snow removal, special event help, etc.
  • Uphold and promote the Mt. Hood Meadows’ Vision, Mission and Core Values
  • Demonstrate best practices in workplace safety as outlined by the supervisor, including compliance with all safety guidelines, procedures, and use of personal protective equipment
  • Understand and abide by the rules in the Meadows Learning Center and Mt. Hood Meadows employee handbooks
  • Arrive on time, with equipment, in clean uniform and presenting a professional appearance in accordance with company grooming standards
  • Work as a team with other employees and departments to give our guests the best possible experience

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ski or snowboard for extended periods of time requiring bending and twisting
  • Navigate in-bounds area terrain in all weather and snow conditions
  • Talk and project your voice for extended periods of time in all weather and snow conditions

Environment

  • Outdoor mountain environment with frequent extreme winter conditions
  • Uneven and/or slick ice and snow covered surfaces
