It’s been a strange holiday break. I’ve not seen the mountain ever close 2 days over the holidays since I started working here. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day, but today was busier. Tomorrow we are looking well-staffed, with 111 lessons in the morning and 19 in the afternoon. It’s New Year’s Eve, but we are NOT open later than any other night – we are open until 9pm tomorrow night, so that our team can ring in the new year with friends and family. That said, if you’re working Sunday, please ring in the new year with that in mind.

It’s Payroll Friday – Get Your Timesheets In!
Please get your timesheets completed by midnight tonight for any days worked from December 17 through December 30. If you need help with this please see a friend, then a lead, then a supervisor and then Claire. We are happy to help, and we want your payroll to be accurate and complete. We’d rather pay you correctly now, than later, so please get those timesheets in NOW!
Adult Lessons – Teach Pay for 2.25 hours
We have aligned lessons teaching hours across the various areas (Youth Daily Lessons, Adult Daily Lessons and Program Lessons) – to 2.25 hours of teach pay. We’ve seen your incredible effort pre-lesson-start by helping guests make sure their equipment is fitting correctly, boots fits skis, strap bindings fitting boots, going over important information, and even getting started with stance and balance teaching right in the lesson meeting area. So … we are going to pay 2.25 hours for Adult Lessons. More information will be shared about this at Adult Lesson Meetings at 8:45am.
Lesson Protocol at the Maze
If you are in a lesson, please use the lesson lane at Ballroom and Buttercup. Do NOT use the public lane when you are in a lesson. This effectively “cut off” all the lessons who are waiting for their turn. At Ballroom, Oriol Sole-Costa has been helping with maze control and he looks down the lines, and if the lesson line is long, he’ll push through more lessons. Also, keep in mind that your whole lesson should be allowed to ride together, so effectively we are letting a whole lesson group through, opposed to one or two guests at a time, so even if the lesson line looks long, it’s actually faster. Again, if you are in a lesson, please use the lesson lane only. If you are in a Private Lesson, please use the Private Lesson lane at Ballroom (the back door) and at Buttercup.
Injured Student or Guest – Call Patrol and Wait There
Just to re-iterate from Rookie Instructor training and Re-hire Clinics, if you encounter an injured guest or have a student get injured in your lesson, the protocol is to contact ski patrol either by radio or phone. The direct phone number is 503-438-3216. You should add this number into your personal mobile phone’s favorites. Internally their extension is 1299. Do NOT bring guests directly to the Medical Clinic. Do NOT suggest guest walk themselves to the Medical Clinic. Ski Patrollers can often make an assessment and render aid without needing to go into the clinic. This can also potentially save guests a medical bill as the clinic is NOT free for guests or team members. ALWAYS CALL PATROL. WAIT FOR PATROL TO ARRIVE. THEY WILL DETERMINE NEXT STEPS.
Rehire Clinics – More on the Schedule
Rehire clinics are required for all returning instructors – that means full-time, part-time, been here forever, or this is my first season teaching here as an experienced instructor. Please sign up on the clinic calendar. If you do not sign up on your own, especially full-time instructors, you will be scheduled for a rehire clinic on one of your regular scheduled days. Holiday Vouchers are In!
If you are a returning instructor your holiday vouchers are in! Please stop by the MLC Supervisor Offices area in the basement of the South Lodge. There is a typo on the vouchers that says, “Expires at the end of the 2021-22 Season” however that is a mistake, and they will expire at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Pro Tip of the Week
As you’ve noted, the weather around here can sometimes be wet. Justin Olson wanted me to pass along a pro tip. Get some of these at an Ace hardware near you. They are less than $20 and your hands will thank you!

About Chris Hudson: Bernie, age 7, had fun with Hudson. She started off on the conveyor belt not able to turn. By the end of the lesson she was turning and stopping and went up on buttercup with me after. Perfect!
About Val: Val was great with both girls (Bella and Harper). He was super patient and sweet. The girls loved him. He was very knowledgeable and talked with me about Harper’s progress and tips.
About Ron Te: He was super helpful and helped me thru a movement that I wasn’t able to do before. He was super friendly and knowledgeable and I had a lot of fun! Go Ronster the Monster!
